Fighter aircraft - A fighter aircraft is a military aircraft designed primarily for attacking other aircraft, as opposed to a bomber, which is designed to attack ground targets, primarily by dropping bombs. Fighters are comparatively small, fast, and highly maneuverable, and have been fitted with increasingly sophisticated tracking and weapons systems to intercept and attack other aircraft.
Comparison of 21st century fighter aircraft - This page attempts to compare the combat performance of fighter aircraft of the early 21st century.
Strike fighter - A strike fighter is a fighter aircraft used to attack surface targets of high value, including ships. It differs from an attack aircraft in that the aircraft remains a fighter, able to fight other fighters, whereas an attack aircraft typically has no, or very limited, capability in this regard.
Air superiority fighter - An air superiority fighter is a type of fighter aircraft designed with the specific intent of being a pure and dominant air combat fighter. Air superiority fighters are usually "cost is no object" aircraft, and procured in lesser numbers compared to smaller and generally more limited aircraft.

This book consists of an A-Z of modern fighters, from 1945 to the present day. The old adage epitomizes Jerry Cook, who spent 28 years at the controls of Air Force jets, including some 400 hours flying F-4 Phantoms on combat missions over Vietnam. Undeterred, the Navy antagonized the Air Force, Congress, and its own F-14 community, and sparked a major legal battle. Here is an unflinching account of his experiences--alternately poignant and side-splitting, always extraordinarily honest and compelling. Nevertheless, in 1992 the Navy took the light, cheap YF-17 and loaded it with technology and weight, which produced an F-18 that has less maneuverability, less acceleration, a range no better than the1952-vintage A-4, and costs almost three times as much as the "Fighter Mafia", who claim that larger numbers have always won in warfare and that for equal dollars America can only produce greater numbers if each one is less sophisticated.
